How the Subsidy Is Calculated — Step by Step

The final price you see above is built in four clear layers. Once you understand them, no showroom quote can fool you again.

Layer 1: Ex-showroom price. This is the manufacturer's list price, nothing else. No RTO charges, no insurance, no delivery, no tax. Dealers always quote this number first because it looks small.

Layer 2: Central subsidy. For electric two-wheelers this is now ₹0, because the PM E-DRIVE scheme ended on 31 July 2026. Some old articles still show ₹5,000 off. That is stale data, not reality.

Layer 3: State benefits. This is where the real savings are in 2026. Delhi gives ₹10,000 per kWh (cap ₹30,000) in Year 1 plus a ₹10,000 scrap bonus. Maharashtra gives 10-15% of the base price. Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh waive road tax and registration. Depending on your state, this layer is worth ₹0 to ₹40,000.

Layer 4: RTO + insurance + delivery. Road tax (0% in exempt states, ~6-10% elsewhere), a registration fee of about ₹300, one year of insurance (₹3,000-5,000) and delivery charges (₹1,000-2,000). Together these add roughly 10-12% to the price in non-exempt states.

The calculator adds all four layers, then subtracts every benefit you are entitled to. What remains is the one number that matters: the price you actually pay.

Real Example: Same Scooter, Two Cities

Take an Ola S1 X (2 kWh, ₹89,999 ex-showroom):

Cost layerDelhiBengaluru
Ex-showroom₹89,999₹89,999
State subsidy− ₹20,000 (2 kWh × ₹10,000)₹0
Scrap bonus− ₹10,000 (if scrapping)₹0
Road tax₹0 (exempt)₹5,400 (~6%)
Insurance + delivery₹5,000₹5,000
Final on-road price≈ ₹65,000≈ ₹1,00,400

The same scooter, a ₹35,000 difference, just because of the state. This is exactly why you must calculate with your own state before negotiating with a dealer.

5 Mistakes That Cost EV Buyers Money

  1. Missing the claim window. Delhi's subsidy must be applied for within 30 days of registration. Miss it, and the ₹30,000 is gone.
  2. Ignoring the scrap bonus. If you own a BS-IV or older two-wheeler, scrapping it for a new EV can add ₹7,000-10,000 to your savings.
  3. Paying road tax you don't owe. In road-tax-exempt states, some dealers still quietly add RTO charges. Ask for the break-up in writing.
  4. Trusting pre-August 2026 articles. Most "subsidy" numbers online include the dead PM E-DRIVE ₹5,000. Your real price is what the calculator shows.
  5. Buying without checking the quota. Schemes like Maharashtra's 1,00,000-unit quota and Telangana's 5,000-unit window close when full, so check the live status first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much subsidy is available on an EV scooter in India in 2026?

The central PM E-DRIVE e-2W subsidy ended on 31 July 2026. Savings now come from state schemes: Delhi gives up to ₹30,000 (Year 1), Maharashtra gives 10-15% of base cost, and many states give full road tax and registration exemption.

How much does an electric scooter cost in Delhi after subsidy?

Under Delhi EV Policy 2026: Year 1 subsidy of ₹10,000 per kWh (cap ₹30,000) + ₹10,000 scrapping bonus + 100% road tax/registration exemption. A ₹1.15 lakh scooter can come down to about ₹85,000.

Is road tax charged on EV scooters?

It depends on the state. Delhi, Tamil Nadu (till 2027), Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh exempt 100%. Karnataka charges a reduced tiered tax of 5-10% (after the April 2026 rollback), Kerala gives a 50% rebate for 5 years.

Until when was the PM E-DRIVE subsidy active?

PM E-DRIVE e-2W incentive (₹2,500/kWh, cap ₹5,000) ran until 31 July 2026. There is no central e-2W subsidy now. The e-rickshaw/e-cart incentive runs until 31 March 2028.

What is the scrapping bonus and how do I get it?

Scrap your BS-IV or older two-wheeler within 6 months of buying an EV to get ₹10,000 (Delhi) or ₹7,000 (Maharashtra) as direct bank transfer. You need scrap proof plus the new EV purchase documents.

Is the subsidy given at the showroom or in my bank account?

It varies. Delhi dealers often adjust the subsidy upfront in the bill of sale. In other states you apply online after registration and receive the amount in your bank account within 4-8 weeks.
